How do you tap into your most powerful guides in life?

Many great thinkers have recognized the limits of rational thought. From Edmund Husserl’s challenge of everyday thinking being a natural default, to Emmanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason that acknowledges sensory intuition, and the neurologist Antonio Damasio’s Descarte’s Error that asserts that intelligence extends far beyond just thinking, philosophers and neurologists agree that “reason” alone is insufficient to nagivate through life. As an additional capability then, “believing” offers much promise.

A Case for Believing

In his essay, “The Will to Believe”, psychologist William James quotes the English judge James Fitzjames-Stephen who said, “We stand on a mountain pass in the midst of whirling snow and blinding mist, through which we get glimpses now and then of paths which may be deceptive. If we stand still we shall be frozen to death. If we take the wrong road we shall be dashed to pieces. We do not certainly know whether there is any right one. What must we do? ‘Be strong and of a good courage.’ Act for the best, hope for the best, and take what comes…. If death ends all, we cannot meet death better.”

While the boldness of this suggestion will resonate deeply with anyone who has faced the vast unknown, it is also terrifying. How…
